YESI Empowers 103 Students to Dream Big

On Saturday, 18th January 2025, 13 YESI mentors gathered at Pothawira Christian Mission Organization in Salima to inspire and guide 103 students in what was marked as the first mentorship session for 2025. The session, part of YESI’s ongoing efforts to empower Malawi’s youths, was divided into two segments to cater for primary and secondary school students’ unique needs.
Pothawira Christian Mission Organization provides comprehensive support to orphaned children, including medical care for surrounding communities and educational opportunities from primary to tertiary levels. The students who participated in the mentorship session reside at the institution and receive holistic care and support.
Topics that were addressed by mentors on the day centered on the importance of education for primary school students, encouraging them to stay committed to their studies and recognise the value of staying in school. Secondary school students on the other hand participated in sessions focused on career planning, exploring subjects that align with their career aspirations, and setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals to achieve their dreams.
Mphatso Magombo, a Standard 8 learner, described the mentorship session as an eye-opener. She expressed that she was motivated to set goals and focus on self-improvement.
“I am thankful for the tools provided during the session. I plan to use them to achieve my personal and academic goals,” added another learner, Emmanuel Samson, who is currently in Form 4.
Pothawira Students Affairs Coordinator, Mr. Lyton Folias, commended YESI for organizing the session.

“Sessions like these are important because mentors are role models for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Such mentorship initiatives play a crucial role in their development,” he explained.
Commenting on behalf of YESI after the session, Fyness Phiri highlighted that the organization’s goal is to provide guidance and support to students, helping them realise their potential and succeed in their academic journeys.
Since 2017, YESI continues to conduct mentorship sessions across Salima district, reaching thousands of students and inspiring them to become leaders and change-makers in their communities.
