Meet Kevious Stonard, a remarkable 20-year-old from Salima district whose journey embodies resilience and determination. As the fourth of five children in a single-parent household, Kevious has witnessed firsthand the challenges his mother faces while running small-scale businesses to support their family after his parents’ divorce years ago.

Humble Beginnings: Kevious with his mother and Samuel outside their home in Salima. This is where resilience took root and hope began to grow.

Despite these early hardships, Kevious never lost sight of his dreams. Today, he’s pursuing an Honors degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, where he’s currently in his first year, a testament to his perseverance and the transformative power of educational support.

The Challenge

“During my early days in secondary school, I faced significant financial challenges. As a single-parent household, my mother struggled to make ends meet, and paying school fees was a burden.”

For many families in Malawi, education remains a luxury they cannot afford. Kevious’s story could have been one of countless young people whose potential goes unrealized due to financial constraints. But then, something changed everything.

The Turning Point

YES Initiative arrived at exactly the right moment in Kevious’s life. Through support from a Scotland-based family, the YES Initiative provided comprehensive support that went beyond tuition fees; covering pocket money and other essential academic expenses that made the difference between dropping out and staying in school.

“The Initiative provided me with comprehensive support, covering my tuition fees, pocket money and other essential academic expenses. This assistance greatly alleviated the financial burden on my mother and me, allowing me to focus on my studies without worrying about financial constraints.”

Proud Moments: Kevious celebrates his MSCE success with the woman who never gave up on him.

Remarkable Achievement

With the financial burden lifted, Kevious was able to focus entirely on his studies. The results speak for themselves-he scored an impressive 11 points in the 2023 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) Examination, opening doors to higher education that once seemed impossible.

The support he received had a profound impact on his life and education journey. It not only enabled him to continue his studies without financial stress but also boosted his confidence and motivation. With the financial burden lifted, he was able to focus on his academic performance, participate in extracurricular activities, and pursue his goals with renewed enthusiasm.

Dreams For the Future

Kevious’s vision extends far beyond personal success. He dreams of becoming a professional Laboratory Scientist who will contribute to Malawi’s development through medical research and inspire future generations. His goal is to give back to his community, just as YES Initiative gave to him.

Becoming the Dream: Now a Medical Laboratory Sciences student, Kevious wears his future with pride and purpose.

“I aspire to excel in my studies in the field of Medical Laboratory Sciences, gain valuable knowledge and skills, and eventually secure a career that will enable me to give back to my community. I’m passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of others, just as YES Initiative has made in mine.”
