FROM FINANCIAL STRUGGLE TO UNIVERSITY SUCCESS: MIKE’S JOURNEY
Growing up in Salima district, Malawi, Mike Movet knew the weight of dreams deferred by circumstance. In a humble family where love was abundant, but finances were scarce, his educational journey would test his resilience from the very beginning.

Mike’s academic excellence earned him selection to Nkhata-Bay Boys Secondary School, a prestigious boarding institution that represented the pinnacle of secondary education opportunities. It should have been a moment of celebration, recognition of his hard work and potential. Instead, it became his first encounter with the harsh reality that merit alone isn’t enough when families cannot afford school fees.
Unable to attend the top-tier school he had earned a place at; Mike made a difficult decision. He requested a transfer to Msalura Community Day Secondary School, hoping that a local day school would be more financially manageable for his family. But even this compromise proved beyond their means, and Mike found himself facing the possibility that his educational journey might end before it truly began.
Yet through each setback, Mike’s dreams remained unshaken. Like many students across Malawi, he would discover that academic potential and unwavering determination, while essential, sometimes need a helping hand to overcome financial barriers.
When Hope Met Opportunity
During his secondary school years, Mike faced his greatest challenge yet. “One of the biggest challenges I faced during secondary school was a lack of school fees,” he recalls. “At times, it felt like continuing my education wouldn’t be possible due to the financial strain.”
It was at this critical crossroads, with a place at a prestigious school he couldn’t attend and fees at a local school still out of reach, that his teacher, Mr. Solomon, became an unexpected beacon of hope. Recognizing Mike’s potential and understanding his family’s struggle, Mr. Solomon shared Mike’s story with the YES Initiative. This act of advocacy transformed what could have been the end of Mike’s educational story into a new beginning. The program covered his school fees, finally allowing him to pursue the education his academic merit had always deserved.

Building a Foundation for the Future
The impact of YES Initiative’s support extended far beyond just covering costs. “The support I received from YES made it possible for me to complete secondary school and pursue higher education,” Mike explains. “I’m now in college because of the foundation YES helped build. Their intervention changed the direction of my life.”
Today, Mike is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Technical Education Technology (Honours) at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), a testament to how targeted support at the right moment can unlock a lifetime of potential.

Paying It Forward
With his university education underway, Mike’s vision extends beyond personal success. “My hope is to use my education to make a meaningful impact especially in the field of technical education,” he shares. “I want to give back to my community and be a role model for students who are facing the same challenges I did.”
His story embodies the ripple effect of educational support – one student helped become a future educator and community leader, multiplying the impact across generations.

A Message of Gratitude and Hope
Mike’s words carry a powerful message for current and potential supporters: “YES has a powerful dream: to help secondary school students and it truly works. I’m living proof of that. To the donors and supporters: your help transforms lives. Please continue supporting this mission, because there are many more students who need a chance.”
Mike’s journey illustrates the transformative power of believing in potential and providing opportunity at the right moment. Despite being forced to turn down a place at one of the country’s top schools and struggling to afford even a local alternative, his dreams of education never wavered. Today, as a university student, he stands as proof that with the right support, no dream is too distant and no potential too great to realize.
Mike’s story is one of many made possible through the YES Initiative Secondary School Sponsorship Program. Every contribution helps create more success stories like his, building a brighter future for Malawi’s students and communities.
