Promoting Education in Malawi through Sponsorship
While primary education has been free in Malawi since 1994, secondary and tertiary education often poses financial hurdles.
According to the International Monetary Fund and UNICEF, Malawi ranks among the world’s ten poorest countries. Poverty, low educational attainment, and limited opportunities for girls paint a stark reality:
- 40% of girls are married by the age of 18
- 40% of children under five are stunted due to malnutrition
- Only 4% of students graduate from high school.
- Diseases like HIV (with a prevalence of 7.7%, according to UNAIDS ), malaria, and tuberculosis remain rampant.
- Over 80% of Malawians live in rural areas, relying on subsistence farming. Climate change worsens this struggle, as unpredictable weather leads to droughts and crop failures.
Established in 2017, our sponsorship programthrives on the belief that education should never be out of reach due to financial challenges. Through the program, we bridge the gap by connecting academically gifted but underprivileged young Malawians with generous individuals.
Since its inception, we have supported over 200 students who have proceeded to various public universities, teacher training colleges, vocational training colleges and launched entrepreneurial ventures.

How Much Does It Cost to Sponsor a Student in Malawi?
The cost of education varies based on the type of school a student attends:
Community Day Secondary Schools
Community Day Secondary Schools are located within local communities, making them more affordable but often under-resourced. These schools primarily serve students who commute from home.

Tuition Fees: MK50,000/ €30 per term
Additional Needs (uniforms, learning materials, exam fees): €20 per term
Total per Term: €50

Boarding Secondary Schools
Boarding Secondary Schools offer a structured environment with boarding facilities, making them ideal for students from rural areas with limited access to day schools. However, the costs are higher due to accommodation and meal expenses.

Tuition Fees and Boarding Costs: €90 per term
Additional Needs (uniforms, learning materials, exam fees): €25 per term
Total per Term: €115

Meet Our Sponsorship Program Beneficiaries
Kevious Stonard

In 2019, Samuel met Kevious, a bright student from Salima who had been selected to attend Chipoka Secondary School. His mother, a vegetable vendor, struggled to pay his fees, just as she had for his three older siblings who had dropped out. With no help from social welfare or NGOs, well-wishers covered his initial fees, and soon after, the Allan Family from Scotland fully sponsored him through YESI.
In 2023, Kevious excelled in his MSCE, scoring 11 points and securing a place at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences to study Medical Laboratory Sciences. His journey reflects the transformative power of educational sponsorship and collective goodwill.
Portipher Moses
Portipher faced financial struggles throughout secondary school, often missing weeks of classes as his family couldn’t afford fees. His older brother, a subsistence farmer, was unable to support him, and multiple bursary applications were unsuccessful. Despite these challenges, he remained among the top students in his class. In 2021, he scored 21 points in his MSCE but was determined to improve. He retook the exams at Cornerstone Christian High School, earning 17 points.
Now selected to study Environmental Science at LUANAR, Portipher is eager to contribute to sustainability and research. While financial challenges remain, he is committed to excelling in university and hopes to one day support students facing similar struggles.
