It was an amazing start to our second mentorship session of the year 2024 at Chilumba CDSS, one of the partner schools where we sponsor students. On Tuesday, February 13, our YESI mentors challenged and motivated students at the school to remain determined with their goals.

Sharing from his experience in secondary school, one of our Mentors, Andrew Khongola, challenged the students to be committed with their studies in order achieve academic excellence.

“Academic excellence does not happen by chase. It needs serious commitment. You can form your own study groups where you regularly meet. Also, if you find challenges in a particular subject don’t be hesitant to seek help from one of your teachers. This is exactly what I used to do in secondary school for me to get excellent grades.”

Similarly, speaking on behalf of all students, Ainess Banda, the head girl, commended the mentorship for its impact on the students. “The session has open our minds on how we can manage our studies effectively through techniques such as time management. It has also helped us to shift our mindset to be goal oriented in order to achieve our goals.” shared Ainess.

Mrs. Khonyongwa, one of the teachers at Chilumba CDSS, commended the mentors for the session, particularly to the female students.

“One of the problems we have here at Chilumba, is that most female students do not finish their secondary school due to lack of mentorship such as this one. So, if we can be having these sessions regularly, I think we can see more female students remaining in school.” Said Mrs. Khonyongwa.

Our team comprised a diverse group of mentors, including Aaron Malunga, a UNIMA graduate who was also lead the delegation, Jack Nyirenda and Miguel Banda, who are students and graduates of LUANAR respectively, Hastings Malunga, a student at UNIMA, Elisha Chikumba, a student at MUST, and Andrew Khongola, who has recently finished his studies at MUBAS.

With a turnout of over 100 students at Chilumba on Tuesday, we’re eagerly looking forward to our upcoming sessions. Our commitment to inspiring and supporting youth to reach for the stars and pursue their dreams remains steadfast.

Since 2017, YESI has been providing tuition assistance and mentorship to secondary school students in the Salima district. Our aim is to empower them to achieve both their academic and life aspirations.
