Students at Mkwero and Matenje Secondary Schools in Salima have been inspired to set SMART goals and strive for academic excellence during the first mentorship sessions of the year, which took place on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

YESI organised the mentorship program to provide students with the tools and guidance they need to succeed academically and personally. Mentors Aaron Malunga, Nickson Limola, Kevious Stonard, Fyness Phiri, and Beatrice Chikacha led the sessions, which covered goal setting, career planning, and strategies for academic success.

One of the mentors, Kevious Stonard, a prospective KUHES Medical Laboratory Sciences student, shared his story of overcoming challenges through mentorship. “I used to struggle with finding direction in life, but mentorship taught me to set clear goals and focus on my studies. It changed my life, “Stonard said to the students. His story resonated with many students, sparking hope and determination among the attendees.

Students expressed enthusiasm about the lessons they learned. Innocent Phiri, a Form 3 student, said, “What we learned today will help us move forward in life with more passion.” Doreen Msiska, a Form 1 student, added, “The session came at the perfect time. Now I can write down my goals and work hard to achieve them.”

The deputy head teacher of Mkwero Secondary School, Agnes Kamina, commended the program and highlighted the mentors’ crucial role in shaping students’ futures.

“In our community, many students don’t have educated role models besides their teachers,” she said.

She encouraged all students to take the advice seriously and focus on their studies. She added that the mentors had planted a seed that would soon grow.

The mentorship sessions impacted 503 students: 344 at Matenje and 209 at Mkwero. The sessions formed part of YESI’s broader effort to support students in Salima. YESI plans to conduct more sessions throughout the year.

“We are satisfied with the success of these sessions and excited for what’s to come,” said Wamwayi Dula, Mentorship and Volunteer Program Coordinator of YESI. “Our goal is to continue providing guidance and support to students, helping them realise their potential and succeed in their academic journeys.”

The YESI Secondary School mentorship program started five years ago and has reached over 10,000 students across schools in Salima district. The program will continue its efforts in the coming months to foster educational growth and leadership in young people.
